New Things Going On Here At Highlands

Hey, sorry I haven't been posting lately due to personal issues. But, before the year ends I would like to share what we've been doing so far. A couple months back at the Windward Community College Symposium, 5 of our Aquaponic members had presented on what we have learned about and done in class. After our presentation, I heard comments saying that we rocked which is always a plus. :)

Another highlight of our class is that we are in the process of expanding our garden. Through our gardening experience, we've come across a problem with birds. The way we've solved that issue was by hanging old CD's up all over the garden to scare the birds away from eating our seeds. In addition, we've been trying to figure out a more effective way of gardening such as what natural alternatives we can use to keep pests away. I don't remember the exact ways of experimenting that was used, but when I remember, I will update you!

OH, GOOD NEWS!!!! We haven't had that many fish dying, and we have two watermelons growing in our garden which I can't wait to eat! Our basil plant has been producing a lot, and we've been having pesto every other week which is just awesome. To top it off, when we had the elementary schools come to our garden, it was a cool experience to share, and the kids really seemed to enjoy themselves. They got to do almost everything from spraying the plants, to breeding the fish. The video that Carson, Devon, and Zach made was very fun, informative, and easy to understand.  In case you're wondering, the video was basically a type of visual aid for the kids on how to do the specific jobs they'd be doing that day, what Aquaponics is, and how it's useful. That's about it, thanks for reading :) more posts coming soon!

Sincerely,

Your blogger, Elizabeth
